The three essentials

“I am the way, the truth and the life.” – John 14:6

Just two words alone are eternal and complete. What a profound declaration that bears repeating.

I AM.

“When God gives a name for His people to call Him it conveys His dominion over all things, the source of His power, and His eternal nature: I AM. He is the self-sufficient, self-sustaining God who was, who is, and who will be… It is a name above names, one that reminds the believer that God is in control, and that He sees His children. It also affirms the identity of the Savior as the Son of God. It can be easy in the struggles of everyday life to lose sight of the majesty and holiness of God, but meditating on the name He gave Himself, and all that it represents, can help put our time on earth into perspective. God is infinite, and He is sovereign over our lives, He Is Who He Is.” – from Biblestudytools.com

Jesus, Master Teacher and God in flesh, is inviting you as He did His closest disciples, into the mystery of relationship with the eternal – the transcendent God residing within humanity – something that even intrigues the angels of heaven! This declaration is certainly all-encompassing and complete, and a parallel to the cohesiveness and completeness of the Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. There is never one without the others. Each facet has unique and divine significance, yet the three are eternally and inseparably One. Such is Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life.

The life you long for

Let’s reconsider what Jesus was saying to an insecure Thomas. Reading between the lines now, Jesus with a gleam in His eye could’ve been saying something like this:

“Thomas, my dear student, I know your heart and I know you believe! Relax for a second. You don’t need to figure it all out. The fact that you’re asking about the way tells me you’re eager, and I like that about you! I don’t want you to follow any steps or rules or fix yourself. Don’t start being a “busy-body.” I want you to continue following me just as you are – even when I am not here physically. That’s enough for me. So, it’s not about you anymore. I am the way, and I am the truth, and I am the life you long for, and the life you were made for. As you go and live life, I’ll reside within you by my Spirit – in your heart, soul and mind. Stay close to me every day, stay true to the words that I will speak to you so the purpose, meaning and life for which you were called will unfold. This is the way: with my truth rooted in you, and my life alive in you, you will change the world.”

“…The Scriptures speak often of the life to come after our life on this earth, and as we follow the voice of our shepherd, we can grasp what that eternal life is in the here and now. We can live this life in such a way that we are not chasing things that don’t last but chasing the things that do last and have eternal significance. This type of life has eternal impact not only for us but for untold others around us. When Jesus refers to himself as the way, the truth, and the life, he is giving us a better way to live our lives through him. He is showing us that through following him daily in faith, he will lead us to a better, richer, more meaningful life than we could ever find on our own.” – Jason Soroski

Here and now

“…I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” – Jesus speaking, John 10:10 (MSG)

We want to help you to know this better way, the only way. Goodbye2hello.com is designed to help you follow Jesus after you’ve first found Him, to live out the new life that is yours, here and now. This new faith life, perhaps you’ve never experienced it. You may be a new believer or a long-timer that has just never stepped into that life that you’ve always been dreaming of, but missing.

It’s time to get on the dance floor. It’s never too late. The Spirit of Christ – the Way, Truth and Life – is always calling, always drawing believers and seekers to Himself. Maybe it’s time for you to respond. Could it be? He is drawing you to “dance” with Him. Let Him draw you. By responding to his subtle movement, you’ll begin to move in a new way. You will begin to sense His power, His Spirit moving in yours.

Be drawn to the dance.

Key takeaways:

  1. Jesus is triadic as the way, truth and life, and has parallel significance to the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
  2. The way, truth and life each are wholly representative of Christ, yet are together One, eternally inseparable and complete.
  3. With Jesus, you have everything. You are complete in Him.

For reflection or discussion:

  1. “I am the way, the truth, the life.” The first two words, I AM, are found throughout the Bible in reference to God, in various contexts. After reading this article, what is the significance of those two words in relation to Jesus, God in flesh (in the “I AM” section above)?
  2. What is an important change in perspective that occurs in the life of a follower of Jesus (in the section “The life you long for”)?
  3. The concluding quote by Jason Soroski is quite powerful. Reflect on what these words mean in your life as you begin to follow Jesus. What words stand out to you the most, and why?
