Man on the mountain

Most of my life has been about what I thought was “being a Christian.” Maybe I got it partly right, but I came to realize at a turning point in my life, that getting it partly right was not enough for the transformation in this life, to live a real life, here and now. Maybe it was enough to save me by the skin of my teeth, but not nearly enough to change me in this life.

I now wanted to know what the One I claimed to follow was really inviting me to….

So He went up on a mountain.
As a confused and chaotic world scrambled for meaning.
He sat down and spoke. And the listeners would never be the same again.
His eyes looked upon us, broken people, you and I.
With compassion He blessed.
Those who mourned, who were meek. The persecuted, the hurting. Those parched souls, thirsting for something more. Something real.
He promised us the Kingdom.
Never again would we see religion, or theology, or the law, or looking good, as the way.
For this old way, so broad, many did follow. Oh yes, we knew the law but now knew that it was futility. As was attaining status and acclaim. For these things could not transform.
The masses, you and I, we could never, ever be good enough. Nor could we ever make our own hearts pure before Him.
But… There was a New Way. It was the secret place.
Now, no more relying on our own goodness, our works that could be seen. So that we could not hope in them.
But the secret place, of the heart. This was the inner way, the difficult but only Way.
Now it was time to say goodbye. Goodbye to the past, our crooked past, our former loves, and all we had relied upon for oh, so long.
Those of the masses, you and I, who would choose to follow, would be changed forever. No more worry, no more wanting. Seeking no longer, religion or theology or external works to be seen.
Seeking no longer our own righteousness, you and I.
But His. Only His. The Man on the mountain.
Jesus.

Hey, welcome to goodbye2hello! My name's Joseph, and I'm the head staff writer. I'm also a father, brother and son, and I'm learning to follow Jesus. Yes, that's right, learning! The number one thing I would tell you is that the journey with Jesus is all about your heart and learning to surrender it more to Him each day. Simple as that, but also as difficult as that! I hope the pages here will shed some light for you on building your foundation with Jesus, and then what it looks like through the lives and experiences of the first followers, throughout the New Testament, to walk daily with Him. We are on this journey together, you and I.
