Prepared

“So surely you ought to stick to what you know is certain… All of Scripture is God-breathed; in its inspired voice, we hear useful teaching, rebuke, correction, instruction, and training for a life that is right so that God’s people may be up to the task ahead and have all they need to accomplish every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:14-17

I am prepared

Preparation is necessary before a journey. It is vital in your journey with Christ. There are two personal letters that the Apostle Paul wrote to his young protégé named Timothy, in the mid-first century. Paul provided fatherly instruction, admonition and encouragement so that young Timothy would be more fully prepared for his journey into discipleship and ultimately church leadership. Excerpts from these two letters to Timothy are below. These precious, wise words, time-tested and proven, still hold very true for followers of Jesus today.

Read through these passages as if Paul were writing to you personally. When reading them, add your name to the beginning of each. Below the passages you’ll find a number of principles extracted from them, for living as a Christ follower that’s prepared for the unknown future ahead.

“Timothy, my dear child, I am placing before you a charge for the mission ahead. It is in total agreement with the prophecies once spoken over you. Here it is: with God’s message stirring and directing you, fight the good fight.” (1 Timothy 1:18)

“Our teaching about this journey is intended to bring us to a single destination—a place where self-giving love reigns from a pure heart, a clean conscience, and a genuine faith. Yes, some have walked away from these traits and have fallen into a life of endless blabber and nonsense.” (1 Timothy 1:5-6)

“Place these truths before the brothers and sisters.
Reject worldly fables. Refuse old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself toward godliness. Although training your body has certain payoffs, godliness benefits all things—holding promise for life here and now and promise for the life that is coming... Don’t let anyone belittle you because you are young. Instead, show the faithful, young and old, an example of how to live: set the standard for how to talk, act, love, and be faithful and pure… Don’t neglect the gift that was given to you…” (1 Timothy 4:6-15)

“Your quest is for justice, godliness, faithfulness, love, perseverance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith! Cling to the eternal life you were called to…”
(1 Timothy 6:11-12)

“…protect what was entrusted to you! Walk away from all the godless, empty voices out there, and turn aside from objections and arguments that arise from false knowledge…”
(1 Timothy 6:20-21)

“…don’t be embarrassed to testify about our Lord… God has already saved us and called us to this holy calling—not because of any good works we may have done, but because of His own intention and because eons and eons ago (before time itself existed), He gave us this grace in Jesus the Anointed, the Liberating King. And now, the time has come! That grace was revealed when our Savior, Jesus the Anointed, appeared; and through His resurrection He has wiped out death and brought to light life and immortality by way of this good news.”
(2 Timothy 1:8-10)

“Remember the words that you heard… Retain them as the model for healthy and sound teaching in the faith and love that are available in Jesus the Anointed. As for the precious thing entrusted to you, protect it with the help of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.”
(2 Timothy 1:13-14)

“…run away from youthful desires. Instead, direct your passion to chasing after righteousness, faithfulness, love, and peace, along with those who call upon the Lord with pure hearts. Excuse yourself from any conversations that turn into foolish and uninformed debates because you know they only provoke fights. As the Lord’s slave, you shouldn’t exhaust yourself in bickering; instead, be gentle—no matter who you are dealing with—ready and able to teach, tolerant without resentment, gently instructing those who stand up against you. Besides, the time may come when God grants them a change of heart so that they can arrive at the full knowledge of truth.
..” (2 Timothy 2:22-25)

“And know this: in the last days, times will be hard. You see, the world will be filled with narcissistic, money-grubbing, pretentious, arrogant, and abusive people. They will rebel against their parents and will be ungrateful, unholy, uncaring, coldhearted, accusing, without restraint, savage, and haters of anything good. Expect them to be treacherous, reckless, swollen with self-importance, and given to loving pleasure more than they love God. Even though they may look or act like godly people, they’re not. They deny His power. I tell you: Stay away from the likes of these.”
(2 Timothy 3:1-5)

“And now I bring you this charge before God and Jesus the Anointed, the one destined to judge the living and the dead, at His glorious appearance and His kingdom: go out and preach the word! Go whether it’s an opportune time or not! Reprove, warn, and encourage; but do so with all the patience and instruction needed to fulfill your calling because a time will come when some will no longer tolerate sound teaching. Instead, they will live by their own desires; they’ll scratch their itching ears by surrounding themselves with teachers who approve of their lifestyles and tell them what they want to hear. They will turn away from the real truth you have to offer because they prefer the sound of fables and myths. But you must stay focused and be alert at all times. Tolerate suffering. Accomplish the good work of an evangelist, and complete the ministry to which you have been called.” (2 Timothy 4:1-5)

“May the Lord be with your spirit, and may His grace be with you. [Amen.]” (2
Timothy 4:2)

Guiding principles

From those admonitions to Timothy from Paul, we decided to extract and paraphrase some guiding principles from his words. We’ve listed them below. Young Timothy learned from his father in the faith that these principles were the marks of a disciple as a humble servant leader, a courageous witness for Christ, and a radiant light to a dark world. You surely can add more principles from Paul’s words to this list!

  • Don’t rush ahead of the Spirit’s leading. Remember to dance! He will lead you. (review here)
  • Be genuine and let your inner life in Christ manifest in your outer life. Remember love, humility, purity, sincerity.
  • Be different than others in the world around you by following the teachings of Christ.
  • Nurture and develop what you believe to be your gifts and calling to minister to others.
  • Cling to your faith as your life preserver.
  • Remember that pride displays itself in many ways, including being ashamed or embarrassed about your faith. Be courageous and bold because your life is Christ.
  • Always be teachable while avoiding endless debates and needless bickering.
  • Always remember the Godly and truthful teaching you’ve received from others, but let the Spirit of Christ be your guide to discern truth in all teaching.
  • Be diligently discerning in all relationships and interactions inside and outside the church. Never be judgmental, but be discerning. The more you’re rooted and established in Christ, the deeper discernment you’ll have.
  • Go out and speak truth in grace at every opportunity.
  • Stand firm and steadfast even as the world crumbles around you.

Taking steps…

  1. As you’ve now completed this course, do you feel like you’re more prepared to walk the walk with Jesus? Please discuss or journal about your feelings in more detail.
  2. We’ve intentionally let the Bible speak for itself in this last section, without a lot of additional narrative. The very first passage above the photo is from the second letter from Paul to Timothy. Of the five purposes (proper uses) of scripture, which one is weighing most heavily on you now?
  3. Of the many compelling exhortations penned from the Apostle Paul to Timothy that we’ve included above, is one in particular drawing you in? Take that passage, memorize it, then read its entire chapter in your own Bible translation, perhaps read it in other translations, and then be prepared to share in your discussion (or journal) why it’s having an impact on your life. Also be prepared to recite or journal your memorized passage.
  4. As a final exercise, discuss or journal about some practical, realistic, achievable and measurable goals, based on any of the guiding principles we listed, that will continue to prepare you to more fully walk out your “goodbye-to-hello” life with Jesus.
  5. Finally, do you feel that this section about “Traits of a Christ follower” has helped you better understand what your life will look like as a Christ follower? Can you think of other traits that could/should be included in this section? If so, provide scriptural references and rationale. Please share this with us here!
